"The file format for storing a sound recording (e.g., WAV, MP3, FLAC). Each file type has advantages and drawbacks - for example, WAV files are widely used as they are uncompressed and no sound data is lost but they require large amounts of storage space. Compressing files into MP3 reduces the space required but results in data loss [1,2]." (from the Acoustic Index User's Guide)
